Joseph West

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph West, PhD, FIEAust, is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean Indigenous in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne. He is a RAEME officer with 34 years of service in the Australian Army across regular and reserve roles, including operational deployments to Afghanistan and Timor-Leste. He teaches Master’s-level robotics planning and autonomy and conducts research in autonomous decision-making, focusing on robotics, autonomous systems, and applied artificial intelligence for operational environments. Joseph holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (First Class Honours), a Bachelor of Computer Science and a Master of Engineering Science (Project Management) from the University of New South Wales, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Artificial Intelligence from the Queensland University of Technology.
