Ian Wing
Biography
Ian Wing is a Visiting Military Fellow at the Land Warfare Studies Centre and a Senior Visiting Fellow at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of New South Wales, at the Australian Defence Force Academy. He has held previous academic appointments as an Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University and an Adjunct Professor at Macquarie University. He has over twenty years’ experience in intelligence, security and counter-terrorism within the military, national security, private enterprise and academic sectors. His service with the Australian Regular Army included postings with the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, the United States (US) Army and the Special Air Service Regiment. He deployed operationally to Timor-Leste and Iraq, and was awarded the US Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in combat. He served eight years in strategic intelligence with the Defence Intelligence Organisation and seven consecutive terms as the President of Australia’s Intelligence Institute. He is a graduate of the Royal Military College, Australian Command and Staff College, the Australian Defence Force Academy and the University of New South Wales. His career has included work in the security industry and he has extensive experience working in Australia and overseas with personnel from private military companies (PMC). While on active service in Timor-Leste and Iraq, he served alongside PMC personnel and coordinated the operations of national armed forces and PMC.
